45 mins. From La Rochelle. Benefiting from a micro-climate, La Bretonniere is a small rural village with bakery.Situated between Mareuil sur Lay and Lairoux on D60. Lucon, (just over 6kms away) has hypermarkets, shops, restaurants, and a market Wed & Sat am. The village is ideally situated for walking and has its own marais, (managed water meadows) where you can see 3 types of Egret, Herons, Bitterns, Swans, Storks, and sometimes Sacred Ibis. A nature reserve is only a few miles away, as is the coast, (½hr drive) with long sandy beaches. Thousands of migratory birds pass over the area in spring and autumn. For golfers there are 5 golf courses within easy reach. Wine lovers may go wine tasting at local vineyards. Visit gardens, the “Venice Vert” with its tranquil duckweed covered waterways, beautiful La Rochelle, and its aquarium, Les Sables d’Olonne, start of the Vendee Globe (Ellen McArthur), it also has a good zoo. Talmont castle, (Richard the Lion Heart), Vouvant, an old walled town, the valley of the river Yon, plus much more a short drive away. La Rochelle to the South, and Nantes approx:1 hour North, so easy access from both airports. Flybe from Southampton, Birmingham, and Manchester, Easyjet from Bristol and Gatwick, Ryan Air from Stansted and Dublin, all fly in to La Rochelle. Ryan Air fly from Stansted and Bournemouth to Nantes. Both airports have car hire facilities. Brittany ferries to St Malo, Caen and Cherbourg ,or by the cheaper L.D.Lines to Le Havre.
