Additional Information
The countryside around the area is stunningly beautiful, red poppies grow wild in the spring, followed by fields of sunflowers in the main summer months. Wine making is the main industry of Languedoc and there are fields of vineyards as far as the eye can see.
The breathtaking medieval Cité de Carcassonne, a Unesco heritage site, is an absolute must see. The 52 towers and two rings of fortified walls surround a bustling town with small narrow cobbled streets lined with restaurants and boutique shops.
The beautiful Canal du Midi is also Unesco world heritage site. You can take a cruise along the Canal from the ports of Carcassonne, Trebes, Homps and Le Somail. Choose between tourist boats with a guide, or hire your own boat by the hour, day or week.
Closer to home, (within 10- 15 minutes) there is Lac de La Cavayere a lovely safe swimming lake with a sandy beach, known locally as 'Carcassonne Plage'. In summer months you can book horse-riding treks and for the children there is a thrilling aerial adventure park next to the lake, with rope ladders in the trees and a dare devil cable swing over the water. An Australian Animal Park and Bird Sanctuary are also close by and larger aqua parcs and adventure playgrounds can be found within 30-40 minutes.
Languedoc-Roussillon wine region is the largest, oldest, and without doubt, one of the most dynamic wine making regions in the world. There are plenty of opportunities to take a wine tour or just stop in at local producers to taste and buy local wines.
There are many Abbeys, Romanesque churches, Standing stones, Cathar castles and stunning Cathedrals worth visiting, in and around the region. The local area is known as Cathar country and is full of rich and interesting history. Take a stroll around circular medieval villages, fortified towns, or take a drive through picturesque villages and stop to wander around the colourful open air markets. There is a different local market held most days in the nearby towns and villages.
Throughout the summer months local fetes and carnivals are held in the main villages and throughout July, open air concerts and shows are held in and around Carcassonne. Medieval jousting is held daily at the Cite and on Bastille Day (14 July) the Cite is 'set alight' with a breathtaking firework display.
For the lovers of outdoor pursuits you are spoilt for choice. Gorges, valleys and mountain massifs offer a wide range of outdoor activities, from walking, hiking, canyoning and rafting to rock climbing and paragliding. Canoeing and kayaking is offered by a local company along the river Aude, just 10 minutes from the house.
Golf is popular with the warm climate making it a pleasure to play. There are ten clubs, including championship courses, within 90 minutes of the house. Carcassonne is the nearest course and is suitable for all levels of players.
Rennes Le Chateau is also worth a visit. The secrets and mystery that surround the town are now the core of many books, including Dan Brown's bestseller the Da Vinci Code and Kate Mosse's latest book Sepulchre.
The sun drenched beaches along the Mediterranean coast are just 45 minutes away, with Narbonne plage, a beautiful long sandy beach, proving to be the most popular with our guests.
Ski resorts can be reached within 90 mins and the Spanish border in 80 mins.
