According to the legend, long before the Roman Age, when the inhabitants of the River Tiber " Veii Umbri" where looking for a place to build their town, an eagle seized the tablecloth where the people were eating and dropped it into the top of the hill. This was considered as a sign of fate, so the town has been built on this hill. And the eagle has become the symbol of Todi.
Todi, renown as “ideal town in the world” according to an American University research, is surrounded by three circle of walls which corresponds to the increase of the population during Etruscan, Roman and Medieval times.
A careful historian of the eighteent century counted a good 365 castles in the area of Todi, and thus he wrote that Todi could boast of having as many castle as the year's days. Many of them had been destroyed, many of them became ruins, but thirty-seven of them still represent the current communal hamlets.
