Location Details

Aylmer - home of the Ontario Police College, close to Lake Erie beaches, fishing & birdwatching

Aylmer is a quiet town in Southwestern Ontario and is the home of the Ontario Police College, and is known for its population of Amish and Mennonite families who farm in this area. Southern Ontario is known for its lush farmland and corn, soy beans and ginseng grow in this area as well as many dairy farms and orchards. There is also the weekly Tuesday Farmers market in Aylmer and the town is just minutes from the beaches at Lake Erie - Port Bruce, Port Stanley, Port Burwell, all of which have great lake fishing! During the month of March the Aylmer area is visited by tens of thousands of Tundra swans, as they migrate from their summer feeding grounds on Chesapeake bay and fly north to the Arctic to breed. On their journey they stop at the Wildlife Management Area in Aylmer to rest and feed before continuing their annual migration. In late summer the north shore of Lake Erie sees a unique migration of Monarch Butterflies, which spend the winter in Central America and gather in this area in the Fall as they prepare for their epic journey south to winter in Mexico. Thousands of Birds of Prey, who also fly south for the winter, pass through this area on their winter migration. Visit nearby Hawk's Cliff and watch for our native Raptors. Some birds such as the Turkey Vulture, Red Tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk and Bald Eagle are summer residents in this area. Aylmer is just a 2 hour drive from world famous Niagara Falls, which is truly one of the Wonders of the World!
